Oral Cancer Screening

What is an oral cancer screening?

Oral cancer is one of the most curable diseases when it’s caught early. That’s why we perform an oral cancer exam at every visit with your hygienist in order to identify any abnormalities. We perform manual exams, by both the hygienist and the dentist.

If necessary, we do biopsies which are performed in house by our general and specialist dentists.

About oral cancer

One American dies from oral cancer every hour. Virtually everyone is at risk. In fact, 25% of cases of oral cancer occur in people who don’t smoke and have no other lifestyle risk factors.

Are you at risk for oral cancer?

There are some lifestyle risk factors which increase your risk for oral cancer, namely tobacco and/or alcohol use, exposure to human papillomavirus [HPV]. However, the amount of risk increases with with age regardless of these lifestyle risk factors.

  • Patients 18 -39 without lifestyle risk factors have ‘increased risk’.
  • Patients 40 and older without lifestyle risk factors have ‘high risk’.
  • Patients 40 and older with the lifestyle factors mentioned above have ‘highest risk’.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about oral cancer screenings or to schedule an oral health consultation with one of our doctors.
