We know from many years of research on the tobacco industry that smoking has adverse health effects on many parts of the body, including dental and gum health. In recent years e-cigarettes and vaporizers have become increasingly popular substitutes for smokers not keen on the effects of tobacco. Smoking e-cigarettes and vaporizers, or vaping, has also become quite popular with the youth of today, especially with the myriad flavors available.
While there is little long-term research on the effects of vaping on oral health, recent studies have shown that vaping does indeed have adverse oral health effects. Studies have found that vaping causes inflammation due to changes in how the immune system reacts and that people who vape have a higher incidence of cavities than those who don’t.
The most alarming finding? Not only are we seeing similar oral health outcomes to smoking in people who vape, but more and more young people are attracted to the habit.
So what’s the solution? The best way to take care of your oral health is to be diligent in your at-home dental hygiene – brushing and flossing twice a day – and to make sure you keep up with your 6-month dental checkups. And as always, if something feels uncomfortable or wrong, you can always contact your dentist for advice on the best course of action.
